No, we are not storm chasers, we are storm spotters. As a storm spotter, we work with the National Weather Service and provide what is called Ground Truths about what is going on during severe weather. By using spotters. the NWS is able to provide better information to the public about what is going on during severe weather and the spotters help to locate and determine the nature of events, such as tornado's and more.
Storm Chasers do just that, they chase storms from place to place, looking for the opportunity to photograph images of the storm, take people on tours looking for tornados and more. Storm Chaser also provide some information back to the NWS, but it's not always the same as reports from people that live in the area and work to help protect their communities.
Most Storm Chasers follow a Code of Ethics, that includes obeying the law and safety. There are some chasers that you have to watch out for as they don't always follow the Code, but without Chasers, there is a lot of valuable data that would never have been obtained in the past, nor would they be able to provide more data in the future.
