A repeater is a device which will receive a signal on one frequency and simultaneously transmit it on another frequency. A repeater can be used to retransmit some of the following:
- FM Voice - most common
- ATV - Amateur Television
- AN and SSB - not common
- Digipeaters - primarily used for packet communications (data)
- Mulit-channel (wideband) - Amateur satellite
Most ham radio operators are familiar with FM voice repeaters. They are currently the most popular repeater system used in Amateur Radio. The repeaters are commonly found on 29, 144, 222 or 440 MHz bands. Though not as popular, there are FM repeaters on the 6m amateur band.
Repeater systems are not limited to amateur radio. Most emergency or public service radios operate on a repeater system, which allows the radios to communication over a longer distance.
