We are now an affiliated club and not just an ARES® unit of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). At the end of September, we sent in our request for affiliation after many months of considering this move. After looking at many of the benefits to our team members and the organization as a whole, it was decided to make the application.
On the weekend of October the 6th, the ARRL Executive Committee approved our application for club status and has granted us all rights and privileges for affiliated clubs. Our official Date of Affiliationis October 6th, 2007. They have stated that they mailed our papers back to us today (October 9th) and we will be looking to receive them by the weeks end.
Even though we started out just working on being an ARES® unit, it was seen that to better serve our community, our members and beyond, we needed to seek club status. With the approval of the section leaders and the Executive Committee, this is now a reality.
One of the unique aspects of our organization being a club, is that we do not have any club dues. As stated in the beginning, we will not collect dues from our members as long as possible. We would rather have an ope organization that anyone can be a part of. The support for our organization will come from the general public and members, through donations like it has always been. We seek to continue our effort as the have been since the beginning.
As stated above there where many factors in choosing to become an affiliated club. We have outline some of the benefits that we will now be able to receive or utilize thanks to this affiliation. Some items are a huge benefit to our members, while others are a huge benefit to amateur radio as a whole, still others are a benefit to those that we help.
While we are waiting for out official papers to arrive, we are obtaining more information on the benefits to be able to present and provide them to our members. Some of our new benefits include the following:
- Club Liability Insruance for our members*
- Equipment Insurance for our members*
- Refferals of new and prospective amatuer radio operators
- ARRL Club Supplies
- Club Commissions for New and Renewal Membership applications
- Books to be sent to local libraries
- Mailing list of amateur operators in our local area
- and more
* Insurance for both the club and equipment will cost us money, we will be asking members and the community to donate funds towards the purchase of these two items. Otherwise we may have to charge a small fee to cover these items. More details to come.
