Never say it can't happen here.  On May 2nd of 2008, a Canton and the First Monday Trade Days was hit by an extremely violent storm that produced at least one tornado.  At around 8:15 am in Canton, which is located about 60 miles east of Dallas, a violent storm unleashed an EF-1 tornado with wind speeds upto 90 miles per hour.

During the morning of May 2nd, storms rolled through North and East Texas causing damage in several counties including, Van Zandt, Smith, Rusk and Panola.  It was reported that these storms generated at least one tornado that hit Canton, while possible generating 2 other, unconfirmed tornados in East Texas.

According to sources in Canton, the area suffered little to moderate damage related to the tornado, including downed trees and powerlines.  At the First Monday Trade Days area, there was some vehicle damaged, including one van that was severally damage, but it also helped to protect a van parked next to it with several individuals inside.

These storms rolled into North and East Texas very quickly and produced these tornados and other related events in a very short time frame.  People in Canton said that the tornado happened without notice and lasted for a very short time.  It has been said that it hit Canton three times by skipping.  Officials stated that the tornado was believed to have touched the ground, then returned back into the cloud and touch down, again two more times.

According to the local Red Cross there was not really any damage to any homes or other residential locations in Canton and that there has been no request for housing assistances.  It was reported that there was minor injuries, mainly related to a vehicle accident that was caused by the storm.  Accoring to authorities the Trade Days would continue as usual.
