Scarecrow Festival
Tuesday, 14 October 2008
T
he Scarecrow Festival is just around
the corner. Again, Kaufman County ARES has obtained some vendor booth
spots to setup and present our organization to the citizens and get
people interested in Amateur Radio. This is a great opportunity to form stronger public relations and introduce amateur radio to a new generation.
Last year, this festival was known as the Caboodle Fest and was under the direction of the City of Kaufman, but this year, it is being put on by the Kaufman Chamber of Commerce. Another change for this year is the fact that the event is only going to be held on Saturday. They are having a small scarecrow judging contest on Friday evening, but there will be no events on Sunday. This should be a great time for the family because they have tons of food, craft booths, carnival rides, shows and a lot more.
This year, we will be located on the west side of the County Court House, just a few spaces from were we where last year. We are located next to the Court House building in slots 13 and 14. We will be having the TVARC emergency communications van on hand and will be running several radio stations to allow people to try their hands at amateur radio. This will also be a great opportunity for boy and girl to come and try out amateur radio and start working towards the Boy Scouts Radio Merit Badge and Girl Scoutns Junior Scouts' Communications Badge/Cadettes and Seniors' High Tech Communication Badge/Amateur Radio Patch. We have members that are registered with the Boy Scouts as Merit Badge Counclears.
We have come to love this event, as it allows us to setup a working station, get people on the air and just have some fun, while working on our communication skills. This is a great opportunity to pratice our emergency communications in advance of needing to use them in a real disaster. We have items that have been donated to be raffled off, we are holding an online auction using eBay, we have items to sell and more. This is a great load of fun for the whole family and we hope to see you there.
