Radio Operator License Plate
Kaufman County ARES, Inc. has received its first Texas Amateur Radio license plate. We obtained the plate under the club callsign KE5KBY, which is the first club callsign we received after affiliation with the ARRL. This license plate has been placed onto a 1979 Dodge D-100 truck that has been donated to Kaufman County ARES for a special project.
In Texas, any amateur radio operator is allowed to obtain a license with their callsign on them for displaying on their vehicles. The cost of the Amatuer Radio Operator plate is $2 for the first year for the plate and $1 each year thereafter, along with your normal registration fee. This is a very inexpensve way to obatin a personalized license plate with out having to pay the high fees for them. You can learn a little more about Amateur Radio Operator plates, by visit our dedicated page.
While most amateur radio operators would request the plate to be in their individual callsign, but EC Hodgdon, requested that the plate be issued in one of Kaufman County ARES, Inc. club callsigns and the plates were granted. In the future, when Kaufman County ARES, Inc. obtains more vehicles to be used and owned by the group, their will be the possibility that more plates will be issued under the KE5KBY or KE5RNO callsigns, depending on the purpose of the vehicle.
This current plate was issued to our first donated truck, a 1979 Dodge D-100 ½ ton pickup, that has become the Project SKYWARN vehicle. Usually, the license plate would be one of the last items replaced on a project vehicle, but we wanted to go ahead and obtain our plate and start displaying it right away.
For any amateur radio operator wanting to obtain their Radio Operator plate, it could not be any simpler. The process was not always user friendly in the past, but thanks to advancements in how the state issues license plates, the process is as simple as going into your local vehicle registration office and asking to be issued a Amatuer Radio Operator plate and filling out the basic paperwork, which can be found online.
You are given the opportunity to preview the information right there and will have your plates in about a week or two. The process has also been changed to allow you to pay for the renewal of the plates ($1) along with your yearly registration of the vehicle. No longer do you have to make a seperate trip to the registrartion office each year. So, if you are an amateur radio operator, check out the process and show everyone who you are.
