On November 21, 2007, we were granted a second Club Callsign, KE5RNO. This Club Callsign is going to be used along with the KE5KBY Club Callsign for various projects in the forthcoming future. As is the case of the KE5KBY Callsign, the trustee for KE5RNO is Chris Hodgdon (KE5IGO) of Kaufman County ARES, Inc. The current period for this licensee extends until November 2017.
Why did we obtain a second Club Callsign? Well, as we move forward with several projects, it will help us to maintain a unique identity for each program. The KE5KBY is related to our repeaters and command units, while the KE5RNO will be used mainly with APRS and D-Staroperations. We have established a Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) document for the use of this Callsign and it will be strictly enforced. Anyone attempt to bypass the rules of use will have their privileges revoked and further action as needed.
We would like to thank the ARRL is assisting us in obtaining our Callsigns. As stated this callsign, KE5RNO, will mainly be used with our Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS), we will be using it to identify our D-Star Repeater, once we have it online, but for now, we will be working on the creation of our APRS system.
Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) is a great way to track assets during an emergency or operation. By using APRS, we are able to obtain GPS information on equipment, vehicles and personal that have been APRS enabled. Thanks to the support that most manufactures of amateur radios, APRS has become even easier to setup and run.
We are hoping to be able to match our APRS system and the web-based program called Tickets, which uses OpenAPRS and some Open Source work to create a Computer Aided Dispatch system that can track APRS enabled systems.
By having this second callsign, we now have a greater flexibility to put in place more systems that can be utilized for various reasons throughout the county and beyond. In fact, if have are taking part two events on the same day, each one can utilize a different club callsign for easier identification. As we move forward with establishing an EchoLink system, having two callsigns will allow us to be able to operate more EchoLink stations to further our efforts. Be on the lookout for more information regarding our callsigns to come to the website soon.
