We have received a donation of a pickup truck to be used as a project build vehicle. This is part of our Project Responder program that is being developed between Kaufman County ARES, Inc., Kaufman County CERT, Inc. and their parent organization Southern Search & Rescue, Inc.
This truck was partially donated by Emergency Coordinator Chris Hodgdon - KE5IGO to be turned into Project SKYWARN. This vehicle will be used for storm spotting activities, disaster response and public education/promotion. By the time this project is completed the vehicle will receive a complete make-over and extensive markings to show what it is being utilized for.
Project SKYWARN is starting with a basic 1979 Dodge D-100 ½ ton pickup with a Dodge 318 CID engine under the hood. Currently, the vehicle contains a basic 2 meter radio with weather alert on it and a dash mounted LED emergency light. This is a 30+ year old truck and is in amazing condition for its age. You can read more about the project truck and see what is happening with it on our project website.
As we move forward, we will be getting the truck painted in a bright white color, allowing it to be more visible, even during extreme weather. The body of this truck is in very good condition and will require will prep-work to get it ready for painting. We are even looking at replacing the original bed with a utility style bed that can be used to carry various pieces of equipment to make our mission even easier. We will be looking for volunteers in the near future that will be willing to help during various phases of this project.
Unique to this project, is the fact that the vehicle will continue to be driven on a daily basis when at all possible. We plan to have as little down time in its operation. Our goal is to complete this build before the end of 2009 and this will be possible with all our volunteers help. This is going to be a great opportunity to promote SKYWARN and Amateur Radio Emergency Service's (ARES) to the general public and served agencies as well.
Currently, you can view a short video of the truck a few days after its donation, on the project website, just use the link above. This video is hosted on YouTube and we will continue to post new videos as the become available. All photos shall be hosted on the project website. Stay tuned for more updates.
