We are always looking for donations of items that can help support our efforts to serve the communtiy, but you might be asking youself, why is a group of amateur radio operators taking computers for donations. Well, there are several reasons that we are accepting computers for donations. One of the main ones is the fact that it helps our community, be preventing the illegal dumping of computer systems. Yes, if you did not know, it is illegal to throw-out or dump your old computer system, as they contain very dangerous chemicals or were processed with them and therefore are considered hazardous material.
The proper way to get rid of a computer system is to recycle them. There are many ways to recycle your old computers, some being better than others. We feel that we provide one of the best recycling options that is available today. As you read more, you will learn how we can help dispose of your old computers, while helping our organization, the community and other organizations at the same time.
Even if you have a computer from the 1980's, there is still a possibility that it can be used for something, other than a door-stop or anchor. Older machines can be used to setup and run a Linux based server and can handle this operation better than trying to use a Windows product on it. We currently do not need any server systems ourselves, expect ture Pentium III or IV machines, but we can help to set them up to be used by yourself or others. Why not create a home file server to allow you to have a safe place to keep your files or a backup location to keep them. No longer do you have to worry about them being on the computer you work on all the time, now you can share them across your home or small office network easier.
Any computer that we receive, that we will not be able to use will be setup and given to either another organization that can use it or a needy family at little or no charge. Once we have received a computer as a donation, we use software developed for the Department of Defense and wipe the entire system clean, there is no chance of recovery of any data from the hard drive once we have completed the wipe. We then install a new copy of Windows XP Pro onto the machine and get it ready to be used on the internet, including installing all the new Service Packs and more.
Though we can accept all types of computers, for our own needs, here is what we are looking for. We need the following type of systems to use both in our office and during field operations:
- Laptops - prefer P4 but will accept P3 that had Windows XP on them, especially Panisonic Toughbooks
- Desktops - prefer P4 but will accept P3 that had Windows XP on them.
- Servers - P3 or P4 that had either Windows XP or Linux, include blade type servers and rack mount server
- LCD flat screen monitors
- Other flat screen monitiors
- DVD Writers
- DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW and other recordable disk
- USB Flash Drives
